Angel Investors are private investors who have excess funds and are seeking great investment opportunities. There are no real formal networks of angel investors in South Africa. The closest you’ll get is the Investment Network, a company which specialises in linking entrepreneurs with a business funding deficit to angel investors with a funding surplus.
Angel Investors invest in businesses they like, run by people with whom they can identify and doing exactly what resonates with them. The matching process is quite clandestine and requires you to network the right places and identify the right calibre people. Typically, an angel investor would invest their own money into your business and will want to have an oversight role in what is being done, which role may be accompanied by vetoing powers. So be prepared to give up a little bit of equity and a little bit of control.
